How to Recognize Low Self Esteem

Self-esteem is one of the most important qualities in every person’s life. Because it is so important, make sure you are aware of signs that could indicate low self-esteem. When you spot one of more of these symptoms, you can act fast and deal with it before it becomes a larger problem.

7 Helpful Hints on How to Recognize Low Self Esteem

Hint 1: Shame

Shame is one of the main symptoms of low self-esteem. If you feel shameful for any reason, it will begin to erode your self-esteem and take away the pride you have in yourself. Dealing with problems as soon as they come your way will prevent shame from taking over.

Hint 2: Pessimism

Feelings of pessimism are a good indication that your self-esteem may be suffering. When you don’t feel good about yourself, you have a difficult time feeling good about anything. Take a moment to think about why you are having a hard time viewing the world and your life in a positive light.

Hint 3: Exaggeration

When your self-esteem is not intact, you may have a tendency to exaggerate your life to others. You may use over-exaggeration to make things appear more troublesome than they really are in order to get sympathy, or to try and puff yourself up to falsely raise your own confidence or that of others towards you. Either way, it never works for long and will leave you feeling worse than before the exaggeration took place.

Hint 4: Blame

No one wants to blame oneself for a life that didn’t turn out the way they expected. If you find yourself trying to pin blame on others for your life choices, it may be because you struggle with low self-esteem.

Hint 5: Lack of Boundaries

When a person is dealing with low self-esteem, they may allow others to use them in order to get attention of any kind. They may have difficulty saying no to anyone. This lack of boundaries brings the wrong people around, and cuts down one’s self-esteem even further.

Hint 6: Putting Others Down

They say misery loves company, and often an individual with low self-esteem will try to bring others down to their level. This is often done through putting people down verbally. If you find yourself criticizing and cutting others down, it may have more to do with you than the person you speak of.

Hint 7: Social Withdrawal

When you can’t value yourself, you will have a hard time believing that anyone else could value you. Whether a person feels unlovable because of outer or inner issues, they will pull away from others in order to protect themselves from any perceived threat. This has the opposite effect, and often makes a person feel lower than if they were to get out and socialize instead of dwelling on their faults.

Low self-esteem erodes a person’s life in every way. Check over this list to see if you recognize any warning signs in your own life or in the lives of your loved ones. If you feel you may be dealing with this common issue, find someone to talk to about it.

Working on improving your self-esteem is one of the best things you can do to raise your quality of life. Knowing how to recognize low self esteem is the first step.
